Professional Boundaries Checklist
Catch the small drift before it becomes a real harm.
Weekly self-check
- Contact happens through agency channels, not personal accounts or numbers
- No gifts, loans, money, or purchases exchanged in either direction
- No social media connection with participants
- Rides, favors, and errands follow agency policy and are documented
- Self-disclosure is brief, purposeful, and in the participant's interest
- Session time and location match what is documented
- I would be comfortable if my supervisor read every message I sent
The honest no
| Instead of | Try |
|---|---|
| "I'll see what I can do." | "I can't share my personal number, and here is the 24-hour line that always answers." |
| Accepting cash to avoid awkwardness | "I can't accept money — it would change our working relationship. Thank you, though." |
| Silently ignoring a friend request | "I don't connect with participants on social media. It protects your privacy." |
| "Just this once." | "Let me check the policy so I give you the right answer." |
